This year our student will be learning 32 vocabulary terms that are utilized in the acaedmic world...hence the name...Academic Vocabulary.  Each grade level has a few word with the goal of using all 32 words upon completion of the Fourth Grade in an appropriate and scholarly manner.  Understanding vocabulary is a huge part of comprehending what we read and as a parent you can support this foundation for learning by taking the time to explain the meaning of every day words to your child as they arise.  With your help, our children will be more likely to find success with this goal which can help them perform better in school and on assessments for many years.  I'd like to challenge your family to try to incorporate the following words over the next month in your every day conversation.  Perhaps writing one of these words on a post it note and placing in a visable spot in your home will help.
Classify:  Put into groups ex:  When putting away the groceries ask your child what groups they would make or how they would classify their groups.  For example:  "cold food, canned goods, paper products"
Compare:  How things are the same.  Ex: Ask your child to tell you how two things are alike...if they start to share differences reinforce that comparing is about how they are the same...you could do this with anything...friends, clothing, games, etc.
Describe:  Give details regarding how something looks.  Exz: Describe your favorite toys.
