Academic Vocabulary

This is the image for the news article titled

Each grade level has a few word with the goal of using all 32 words upon completion of the Fourth Grade in an appropriate and scholarly manner.  Understanding vocabulary is a huge part of comprehending what we read and as a parent you can support this foundation for learning by taking the time to explain the meaning of every day words to your child as they arise.  With your help, our children will be more likely to find success with this goal which can help them perform better in school and on assessments for many years.  I'd like to challenge your family to try to incorporate the following words over the next month in your every day conversation

Explain:  Tell how, where, why, who, what and when
Potential question:  Please explain why you want macaroni and cheese for dinner tonight?

Determine:  To make a decision or decide.
Potential request:  Please determine which coat you'd like to wear today.

Locate: To find
Potential request:  Please locate your bookbag before we go to the car.

Using these words correctly in front of your children really helps them learn to use them in a meaningful way.
