We are a responsible, respectful, and safe community of learners.  Students at North Elementary recite their motto every day, they also live the motto.  The fourth grade class over the past few weeks has been finishing out the year with actions speaking louder than words.  They have been devoting time to helping others, a sign of respect. They walked the front lawn and picked up sticks to help the maintenance crew with yard prep, which also provided some good exercise.

They have spent several Wednesday mornings helping clean up the pond area and observing the changes that spring brings to the plant life and water life.  They were responsible for cleaning leaves and debris from the water and rocks.  They were also responsible for adding new water plants to the pond and clearing the waterfall area.  These are few of their responses to a couple of questions….

Why was it important to help with the pond?

  • We want the fish and other animals to live
  • Better community
  • Good deeds, make you feel better
  • Makes our school look nice
  • Want people to come by the pond

How did you feel after helping?

  • Cold and wet
  • Proud
  • I felt good inside
  • Dirty and happy
  • Generous and loyal
  • Good, great, amazing
  • Happy
  • Helpful

Just goes to show that effort put forth helping others not only makes them feel good, but, will make you feel good about yourself too.   School is about growing as individual citizens as well as learning reading, writing, and arithmetic.
Fourth grade helping hands reinforced this belief.
